Different Types of Glass
Laminated Glass
Is made up of two or more layers of glass permanently bonded together with an interlayer.
The lamination process results in the glass panels holding together in the event of breakage, reducing the risk of harm.
- Laminated Glass is classified as Grade A Safety Glass.
- The interlayer can be selected to deliver special performance characteristics such as improved insulation properties, improved security, and improved sound insulation properties.
Most popular glass types can be laminated and laminated glass is available in Clear, Tinted, Reflective and Low E glass types. Laminated glass is a popular choice for residential and commercial windows and doors.
- Laminated glass offers improved acoustic insulation over typical annealed glass.
- Laminated glass will hold together if broken reducing the risk of danger from broken glass
Toughened glass (Tempered glass)
Various performance qualities can be added to laminated glass using a specially selected interlayer.Toughened glass has been ‘tempered’ by being reheated and quickly cooled again. This process makes it much stronger than standard glass – it can resist higher impact loads before breaking. It also makes it safer because, when it does shatter, it breaks into many small cubic pieces rather than dangerous shards. It can be used as ‘safety glass’ as mandated in Australian Standard AS1288 and may be mandated in bushfire-prone regions. However, toughened glass has no thermal or acoustic benefits over other glass of the same toning or thickness.
Various forms of glass including performance glass can be toughened
- Safe: When glass is damaged by external forces, debris will be a honeycomb-like scrawled obtuse particles, not easily cause harm to human body.
- High strength: The same thickness of tempered glass impact strength and bending strength is 3 ~ 5 times of common glass.
- Thermal Stability: Tempered glass has good thermal stability, which is able to withstand big temperature difference, 3 times of common glass, it could withstand the 200 degree temperature changes.
Disadvantage:
- After tempering, the glass can’t be cut and machined, the glass should be cut before being tempered.
- Under big different temperature, tempered glass has possibility of self-destruct. Common glass has no possibility to self-destruct.
- Tempered glass surface is not very flat, which could not be made into mirror.
FGI Clear Float Glass
Is a visually colourless and distortion free glass providing high light transmission (daylight) and clarity. Clear Float glass is the core base product for most performance glass products and is commonly used in windows and doors.
- Float glass offers no additional performance benefits in terms of insulation or reduction in solar heat gain
- Float glass will shatter and may produce dangerous shards of glass if broken
